RENEW

Mission Statement – Recruit, Inform, Mentor

The mission of the Local 159 Reach out and Engage Next-gen Electrical Workers (RENEW) committee is to inspire our young IBEW workers to become progressive members of our Local 159. We focus on issues important to younger workers and provide education about the IBEW and labor movement as a whole. We offer a platform for the next generation of workers to foster relationships with all members and leaders of the union.

The RENEW Initiative

We, the RENEW committee of Local 159, believe that increased involvement by all union members is critical to the growth and prosperity of the IBEW. We are dedicated to providing a platform for workers, ages 35 years and under, to learn about, get involved in, and shape the future of our union and surrounding communities.

We will educate these younger members on the opportunities that are available through the IBEW and our local. Our main objectives are to inform the next generation of IBEW workers about the benefits of participation in the union, to provide an environment for young workers to discuss issues relevant to their cohort, to build positive relationships with all members, and to prove our worth within the community.

We propose to recruit journeyworkers to spend time with and mentor apprentices and young journeyworkers about how our local union functions. These journeyworkers are encouraged to explain all facets of the union: the book, union dues, financial policies, union culture, monthly meeting progression and continuing education, and more.

Ultimately we are passionate about increasing involvement in the union. We seek to empower members of every age, from every gender, from every race and from all stages of life and in the industry. We believe that we can achieve this by educating and motivating all members to participate in union activities. RENEW is a great opportunity to build a stronger, more prosperous union.

  • Rebecca Schave – Recording Secretary

Retirees, IBEW 159

Second Monday, 11:30 am, monthly luncheon.  Location varies (see newsletter).
The Local 159 Retirees are a vibrant part of IBEW 159. In addition to hosting monthly lunches around Dane County (second Mondays, at 11:30 am), they are probably best known for their significant ongoing role in putting on the annual Fantasy In Lights display at Olin Park in Madison. From June to January, they put in long hours preparing and maintaining the displays and electrical installations. They also play an integral role in set-up, take-down, and everything in between. Their work makes Fantasy In Lights possible.
